Computer programs on vinyl |
 |
|
This is just brilliant.
http://www.kempa.com/blog/archives/000053.html
I saw this posted over on discogs.com's forums today. It's about Sinclair Spectrum (UK 80's computer) programs being recorded onto vinyl - and you'd then record the vinyl to tape and load it into the Spectrum.
I had a Tandy Color Computer (a coco...) which also used a tv as the monitor and loaded everything from a tape drive (sounds so fancy don't it?).
Eh -maybe I'm not hip, but I wasn't aware of any of this back in the 80's. |

| Very cool indeed. This is the first I've heard of this technology too. Now I'm wondering what the "loading sounds" sounded like.... |

I keep planning to do it but never quite get there - I have old tapes from my color computer. I've always wanted to sample those in and use them in a song. Maybe I'll sample a few soon and pop them up.
Basically - it sounds a lot like modem sounds. High fast bleeps and bloops in a sort of semi-random/organized rhythm. Really neat. |

If you sample the sounds into anything, please be sure to post track and make note of it! Your description makes me that much more intrigued and curious to hear these noises...(by the way, I happen to think modem noises sound COOL ) |

I have some Vic20 computer tapes around here someplace. I'll transfer a program into an mp3 file and upload it for you. |

there's also pure digital glitch harvesting. You can read non-audio binary files as audio. cooledit does it, not sure what else does. open up some dll's and crank the speakers.
I made this song entirely from bit-splicing:
gaijin-planb
this is sort of along the same lines too: http://znc.ctrlaltdel.org/ |

I like this one, but I detect some non-bits here. Didn't you use some delays and a filter too?
I like making those sounds with analog synth modules, but the sounds are what's important, not how you make them. |

I had started the download and I was going to wear my headphones when the "tune" started....holy cow....if I had my headphones on I would be deaf by now
there should a warning before listening: it would not be funny, for a forum about experimental electro-acoustic and electronic music, to have only deaf members _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

This is so cool! Kind of like Autechre but even more 'raw' (and I DO mean that as a compliment)
I'm very interested in using audio imperfections for music. I've used vinyl scratches and guitar feedback quite heavily, but nothing past those. I need to experiment more with bit crushing. |
