Wireless studio stuff. |
 |
|
I am curious, for a variety of reasons...
Suppose a device were developed, using, say, Bluetooth, that you could attach to a midi device, be it a synthesizer or sampler or whatever, which would allow wireless midi communicatons to any midi device in your studio. Would such a capability be desired, especially if the price were reasonable?
How about an 802.11g interface retrofit that would allow your midi AND audio to be routed from your various equipment to a central device, and locked to SMPTE or Word or whatever, allowing for a completely-wireless studio? If it worked, and it weren't an arm, two legs and a nose in price, do you think anyone would be interested?
Just curious.

There are some stuff out already ... I reckon Modularing can do WIFI too.
Well.. it might be of interest... dunno... I guess we could wish for smarter cables and better protocols. Firewire and mLAN are great.
And there are already wireless midi gear. Carlo found some on the net.
Well..midi.. there are new solutions all the time.. to embed midi in a high speed protocol on some high speed bus. Wireless might happen bigtime but they would need a smarter midi protocol and then embed the hardware into something like your NIC... and then using wireless gear.. g version cards.. like the apple extreme card could work ok I guess.
Demand? Hmm.. hard to say.. if things could cost wholesale.. like around 5 USD this might be big. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

The most sensible product would be a digital audio router combined with midi.. that pipes both audio and midi on the same cable ... like mLAN. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

I love it. Just think, with this technology when you are listening to some boreing live performance, you just hack the wireless network and play your own parts. |

Personally, I am not a general fan of wireless, but there are instances where it would be quite useful to have a wireless situation. I've had no experience with Bluetooth or 802.11g or a, but I have with the b flavor and the various IR wireless periphs. I've just been unimpressed with the performance and reliability, or lack thereof, in my own experiences, but the newer technologies appear promising. Either way, I am always hopeful.

I have used the Apple Airport gear since it was first introduced. It is convinient and OK for websurfing but it sucks big time for LAN. g is a bit better but since this is a kind of hub tech we get all the hub probs. This is not Apple´s fault, but a problem with the tech. The useablity is OK as long as you do not have to move elephants across the LAN. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

With midi, you're dealing with SUCH a low data rate, it could easily be an apt alternative for that protocol. Hard to say with regards to latencies though, too many enviornmental variables. Buffers, buffers, buffers.
