This is where we left off...

I agree, I think that's where we are going to end up eventually.
The main form factor is the control surface, which defines the true instrument. The computer part is just a small thing that fits inside.
It will be nice if that part is open and can run many different software engines.

They're all computers anyway, just highly specialized lowest-bidding-contractor-based computers running proprietary software. It would not be difficult at all to adopt a laptop-like philosophy (if not outright jacking the ideas component for component) and consititute a midi controller, a pc (upgradable even), an LCD, and some sweetbread I/O into a compact and portable product. It's basicly just dividing up many of the tools we already use extensively and rearranging them. I would LOVE to replace my synthbox with a "keyboard" that serves all of the same functions, with the added bennefit of being able to unhook the monitor and crap, and taking it out live, all the same sounds, all the same synths, all my patches and sample libraries and everything. I could even check my email on stage, and post messages on the forum here between numbers.

Let's start a company to develop and produce a line of such devices. What do ya say? Mosc? Wink

Maybe we can get Norm to get his cousin Peter Vogel on the horn and secure us some rights so's we can help ourselves to ushering in the future.

The Fairlight CMI Series IV

When I get home, I'm going to hop on Photoshop and have some fun creating this beast. I love delving into pointless impulse-driven amusement-serving projects.

Eeeeeeeek..... so much hard work! And so little money!

The perfect new instrument? Dunno..I am missing a sensible analog GUI for an instrument which would be a mix between Nord Modular, a Roland System 700 and the wave 2.3/waveterm. Inexpensive.. and it must be possible to interface the bastard to computers.. and it must be scalable.

Batteries included... and an option for solar power and methane.

I agree with Greg:

That's a start, but it looks too much like a computer.
Cyx has the right idea, the monitor can be pugged into it for editing. Maybe the keyboard too. Also I would like to see the controls arranged more ergonomically.

Right.. the GUI... a vital part..
One might expect a scalable audio engine which can run on a scalable computer/DSP platform ..soon.

In one sense this has already happened. All Apple boxes which can run OS X will run from the same installation. If the software is written correctly using Audio Core etc.. it will run on old g4s and new dual CPU G5s. Of course.. even a G5 will perform better with certain tasks sent off to a DSP board. I expect someone will develop a scalable and upgradeable DSP platform for general use.. soon. Right now, vendors like TC and others are increasing the number of platforms rather than creating a sensible common platform.

I like all of it, I like that kind of flexability and robustosity. I would slather for some Kyma action, but alas, I am a poor white boy. The newest synthesizer (by this I mean keyboard) that I own is a Roland Alpha Juno 1. Everything else is either virtual, or rack. And my rack collection consists of a Matrix 1k, a DM5, and a TX7, if you wanna call that "rack." Every one of these devices is dependant on completely different things, rather than one device that embodies all of these things, and simultaneously meets the dependancies of each. All with the convenience of an M1. Not like a workstation or something like that, although that is cool too, rather, in this instance, a pure and scalable computer-based synthesis collosus masquerading as a midi controller with a curious I/O section.

Cyxeris - out of sheer interrest:

I like your logo - does it have some special meaning or is it simply some doodle? (if it is that wouldn't make it any less cool - the best graphics I myself came up with were merely coincidental... Wink)

There are meanings there, but the symbol doesnt "mean" anything, per se, other than to symbolize me, my artistic identity.

The basis for it's structure originated out of the imagery used to symbolize comets in old paintings and such, a more "technofied" rendering of that. Then there are the opposing quarters of a circle, with never meant anything specific, but at various times appealed to me as being wings, at others crosshairs. All it really means though is me. I'm sure someone somewhere, probably Jarry Falwell or Donald Wildmon, will start saying that it's some sort of pagan or satan symbol. They might be correct on the latter.
